Growing Relationships through Seeing Each Other

The purpose of this course is to help believers see through obstacles that cloud and compromise all kinds of relationships. This course focuses on the marriage relationship, but in fact the principles found in this simple approach cover any kind of relationship whether marriage, friendship, church boards, work relationships, and even intercultural relationships. Relationships of all kinds encounter obstacles that can be overcome through seeing and hearing one another.

The main point seems incredibly simple. Most of our problems in relationships of all kinds is that we cannot see one another. We don’t understand something of the person’s heart at the other end of our relationship. So rather than responding to the needs within the relationship, we tend to react based on circumstances and our own expectations. This will become very clear in the following sessions.

This course is about much more than conflict management; it’s about the basis of restoring all relationships, which, as we will learn, is compassion. Compassion is experienced when we can see the person at the other end of the relationship. We will use the metaphor of the table to describe the nature and restoration of relationships.

How Does This Course Work?

  • Though this course is focused on the marriage relationship, it can be used for restoration of all kinds of relationships. It is suggested that you have this Course Manual at hand while you are viewing the video sessions. There are six video sessions. If you are viewing and processing this course as an individual, you can write your answers in this Course Manual whether you print it out or purchase a hard copy where available. If you are processing this material as an individual, it is recommended that you share your responses and reflections with another person you trust to gain further insight.

  • This course can also be applied through small groups in homes or local churches. If you are processing this course in a small group, each individual should have a copy or access to the Course Manual so they can reflect on their own answers to the questions. The Course Manual becomes a discussion guide for small groups. You may appoint a facilitator or take turns reading the content of this manual at the beginning of the Table Time sections. The groups should first view the video session, then have individuals share their answers. It is recommended that each person would enter their own answers for reflection. This can be done after the group viewing session. So then, the sequence is as follows:

    • view the video

    • reflect on the Table Time questions share your answers with your group

It is also recommended that when sharing this course with a small group, multiply

into share groups of no more than four to six people.

This course can also be used for married couples. In this case, the parties in the relationship can discuss their answers to the Course Manual with one another. This Course Manual may also be used as a tool for marriage preparation and may be processed with another mentoring couple.
