God’s Remnant Army: 7 Steps to Becoming a Chosen Warrior for Victory

Excerpted from Breaking Open the Foundation of Your Deep.

One of the most powerful lessons from Gideon’s story is the remnant principle.

God often works through a small, dedicated group rather than a large, unfocused crowd.

For many are called, but few are chosen (Matthew 22:14).

This principle is seen throughout Scripture:

  • Noah and his family were a remnant who repopulated the earth.

  • Elijah thought he was alone, but God had 7,000 who hadn’t bowed to Baal.

  • Jesus started with 12 disciples, who turned the world upside down.

God is looking for quality over quantity. He’s seeking those who are fully surrendered and ready to be broken and poured out for His purposes.

In my years of ministry, I’ve consistently observed that God’s most powerful moves often begin with a small group of fully committed believers rather than a large crowd of casual Christians. It’s not that God doesn’t want large numbers—He definitely does! But He typically starts with a committed core who are sold out to His purposes.

This remnant principle should both challenge and encourage us. It challenges us to examine the depth of our commitment to God’s purposes. Are we among the fearful who turn back at the first sign of difficulty? Are we like those who drink carelessly, unaware of the spiritual battle around us? Or are we part of the vigilant remnant, fully surrendered to God’s purposes regardless of the cost?

At the same time, this principle encourages us when we feel out- numbered or overwhelmed. You may be part of a small prayer group in a large, spiritually dry church. You may be the only believer in your workplace or family. But remember, God has always done His greatest work through remnants. Your faithfulness, even as part of a small minority, positions you to be used powerfully in God’s redemptive purposes.

Becoming Part of God’s Remnant Army

So how do we position ourselves as part of God’s remnant army today? The following are some critical steps:

1. Confront Your Fears: Like those in Gideon’s army sent home, we must face our fears and choose faith instead.

Fear is often the first filter God uses to separate His remnant from the casual crowd. Are you willing to step beyond your comfort zone, face your fears, and move forward in faith? Remember, courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s moving forward despite our fears, trusting in God’s presence and promises.

2. Stay Alert: Just as the 300 were chosen for their vigilance, we need to stay spiritually alert, always ready for what God wants to do.

Spiritual alertness is becoming increasingly crucial in our distracted, entertainment-saturated culture. Maintaining spiritual vigilance means developing habits that keep us attuned to God’s voice and aware of the spiritual realities around us. It means spending time in God’s Word, maintaining an active prayer life, and cultivating sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s promptings.

3. Be Willing to Be Broken: Our self-sufficiency must be broken for God’s power to flow through us.

This is perhaps the most challenging step for many of us, especially in cultures that prize self-sufficiency and strength. Being broken doesn’t mean being destroyed; it means allowing God to break down our pride, self-reliance, and self-protection so that His power can flow freely through us. It’s surrendering our agendas, our control, and our desire for credit so that God gets all the glory.

4. Let Your Light Shine: Don’t hide the light of Christ within you. Let it shine brightly for all to see.

Once we’ve been broken, our responsibility is to let Christ’s light shine through us unhindered. This happens as we live authentic Christian lives, modeling Christ’s character and love in our daily interactions. It happens as we share our testimonies, pointing to God’s work in our lives. And it happens as we minister to others in Jesus’ name, allowing His power to flow through us to meet needs around us.

5. Use Your Voice: Sound the trumpet of God’s Word and declare His promises over your life and situations.

God has given each of us a voice, and He expects us to use it for His glory. This means speaking His truth with conviction, declaring His promises over seemingly impossible situations, and using our influence to advance His Kingdom purposes. It means being bold in our witness, clear in our proclamation of the gospel, and unwavering in our stand for biblical truth.

6. Trust God’s Strategies: Trust and obey even when God’s methods seem unconventional. His ways are higher than ours.

God’s battle strategies rarely make sense by human wisdom. He intentionally chooses approaches that seem foolish to human reasoning so that when victory comes, it’s clear that He alone deserves the glory. Are you willing to follow God’s directions even when they don’t make logical sense? Are you willing to step out in obedience even when others think you’re crazy? That’s the kind of radical trust that positions you as part of God’s remnant army.

7. Stand in Unity: Gideon’s 300 moved as one. We need to stand united with other believers, amplifying our impact.

There’s extraordinary power in unified action. When Gideon’s army moved in synchronized precision, blowing their trumpets and breaking their pitchers at the same moment, it created a powerful effect that threw the enemy into confusion. Similarly, when believers move together in unity, submitting to the Holy Spirit’s leadership and supporting one another’s ministries, our impact is exponentially multiplied.

The Promise of Victory

Here’s the amazing thing, when we align ourselves with God’s remnant strategy, victory is assured. The Midianites were utterly defeated, and Israel had peace for 40 years under Gideon’s leadership.

Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was quiet forty years in the days of Gideon (Judges 8:28).

God wants to bring this kind of decisive victory to our lives and our world today. But He’s looking for those willing to do it His way— not by might or power but by His Spirit.

The promise of victory should fuel our faith and motivate our obedience. God doesn’t call us to difficult assignments without also providing the power to accomplish them. When we align ourselves with His purposes and strategies, we can be confident that victory will come, even when the odds seem overwhelmingly against us.

I’ve seen this promise fulfilled repeatedly in my ministry. When we have followed God’s directives, even when they seemed counter- productive or impossible, we witnessed victories that could only be attributed to His power. Whether it was breakthrough in seemingly impossible situations, miraculous provisions when resources were scarce, or transformative revival when spiritual resistance was fierce, God has consistently demonstrated His faithfulness to bring victory when we follow His battle plan.

A Call to Action

I challenge you. Are you ready to be part of God’s remnant army? Are you willing to be broken, to shine brightly, and to sound the trumpet of God’s Word?

It’s time to break open those spiritual pitchers, let the light of God’s presence shine through you like never before, raise your voice, and declare God’s truth over every situation.

Remember, with God, less is often more. He’s not looking for your ability but for your availability. He’s not impressed by your strength but by your surrender. When you make yourself fully available to Him, there’s no limit to what He can do through you!
