Recognize Your Breakthrough Season: The Key of David to Walk in Heaven’s Authority
The “Lord of the Breakthrough” is a specific title and name given to the Lord by one of the heroes of the Bible.
This great person was named David and it’s found in 2 Samuel 5:17-25 (NKJV):
Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. And David heard of it and went down to the stronghold. The Philistines also went and deployed themselves in the Valley of Rephaim. So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?”
And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim. And they left their images there, and David and his men carried them away.
Then the Philistines went up once again and deployed themselves in the Valley of Rephaim. Therefore David inquired of the Lord, and He said, “You shall not go up; circle around behind them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees. And it shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall advance quickly. For then the Lord will go out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.” And David did so, as the Lord commanded him; and he drove back the Philistines from Geba as far as Gezer.
Before we get into this passage, let me ask you: Have you ever tried to punch through a wall? I don’t advise it; but if you have, you know you are met with resistance and pain.
Now, have you ever submerged your hand into water? Your hand effortlessly cuts right through the water. There is little resistance. I believe with all my heart that a season of remarkable favor, where all the resistance—the walls and obstacles—are gone, and a season is going to come upon your life where you will be dropped into the miracles of God.
The Devil Started It, But God Will Finish It
Here are a few points from this story that apply to this new season. David had just been freshly anointed king; something he had waited more than a decade to happen. He was crowned king, and he is faced with a wall, or resistance, just on the heels of that anointing. When you are anointed—and every believer is anointed because the Holy Spirit abides in you—the expression of the Holy Spirit’s abilities, character, power, and gifts in your life come out; so you don’t have to go looking for a fight.
The enemy will find you because he’s afraid of what you carry: the gift grace and glory.
As we read this story, we learn that the devil and his coworkers, the Philistines, were never afraid of the king who preceded David, King Saul. When we enter this part of David’s life, we see that Saul has passed away, and David has taken his place. The camp of the enemy hears the news and is not happy. They are afraid of David, so they pursue him at the beginning of his journey.
In our lives, intense and unjust adversity is often a prophetic sign that you’re about to have a Kingdom breakthrough. That adversity morphs into discouragement as you get closer to the breaking point. I’ve said it for years that discouragement is often the greatest when a breakthrough is the closest.
But why? The enemy’s strategy is to try to destroy dreams and destinies in their infancy, before they become strong. It’s important to understand because you may have had an unusually intense childhood trauma or difficulty. Hear me: it wasn’t because God was not with you, it’s because the devil was afraid of you, so he tried to take you out. Maybe the devil tried to kill you in the womb or as a child, but God didn’t let it happen; He preserved your life.
When we go through unusually intense circumstances, we begin to wonder why the furnace is so hot and why the trial is so difficult—it’s because the devil has been afraid of what you carry. He’s terrified of what you will do in your destiny by following God in the future.
David was well-acquainted with this fact. That’s why in he wrote, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all” (Psalm 34:19 NKJV). This is a promise for every believer now.
I have to admit, I never woke up and said to God, “You said I’d have many afflictions, and I don’t have many. So I’m standing on Your Word for many afflictions to come my way.” No, I didn’t have to tell Him that at all. All I had to do was live long enough and the afflictions came to me. If you’re anointed and walking in your destiny, they will come with an intensity that is not normal.
But the Bible says the devil may start the fight against you, but God’s going to finish it. Don’t you dare quit without realizing that God has written an excellent ending to your story! He will help you overcome because we are called to be overcomers. This doesn’t happen without difficulty, a storm, or a set-back; and in those moments, we see the incredible power of God. As His Word says:
So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun; when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him (Isaiah 59:19 NKJV).
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brother-hood in the world (1 Peter 5:8-9 NKJV).
Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial, which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christs sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad about exceeding joy. If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified (1 Peter 4:12-14 NKJV).
Never interpret adversity as God’s opposition to your life and destiny. It is simply a sign we live in a broken world. Often, agnostic and nonbelievers will throw in your face the idea that if our God is so good, if He’s so loving, why are children dying in Bangladesh? What about wars? What about diseases? What about injustice? The answer is simple: this world as it is today is not the same world God created. He created a perfect, sinless world. When man sinned, he broke the earth and the universe. It remained broken until the Savior came and broke the curse off us. His name is Jesus and He shattered the effect of that fall from off our lives by redeeming us from our sinful nature.
