Why Holy Spirit Won’t Let You Stay Comfortable

When revival reaches maturity, something begins to shift among the people.

They no longer attend simply to receive. They come ready to give. Generosity increases. Sacrifice becomes normal, and opportunities to serve are no longer avoided—they are pursued and embraced with joy.

These manifestations are not forced programs or strategic initiatives. They are the natural result of transformed hearts. Broken people who have become benefactors of the grace and goodness of God cannot remain passive for long. Something inside them must move. Those affected by revival begin to develop burdens for people they have never met and places they have never seen. Compassion surfaces for those who may have never heard the gospel, and they begin to feel the weight of eternity pressing upon their hearts. The awareness grows that souls hang in the balance and something must be done.

This is the missional overflow of revival. It just happens. It is not manufactured, and it is not a quick emotional response. It is deeper and more genuine.

One way to understand overflow is through the picture of pressure. When rain falls in the mountains, rivers begin to swell. Eventually, the banks can no longer contain the rising water. The river spreads outward into surrounding fields and valleys. It does not ask permission. It does not wait for a committee meeting. It flows because pressure demands release.

Revival works the same way.

When God begins to pour out His Spirit, something builds inside His people. Love increases. Compassion deepens. Faith rises. Gratitude overflows. Eventually, the heart cannot contain what God has placed inside. It must flow outward. A revival that never over-flows is not a healthy revival.

Life that does not reproduce eventually dies.

A Sign That Revival Is Real

One of the clearest signs that revival is genuine is outward movement. Short-term mission involvement often doubles, sometimes even quadruples, during revival seasons. Evangelism becomes natural. Compassion ministries expand. Prayer for the lost intensifies. This is not theory, it is history.

The Welsh Revival of 1904 sent missionaries around the world within a few short years. The Moravian Revival in Herrnhut resulted in one of the greatest missionary movements in church history. The early Church in the book of Acts moved rapidly from Jerusalem into Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. Real revival spreads. It always has and it always will.

It Happened to Us

I saw this happen in our own church.

Before revival, many believers struggled just to stay engaged. However, after revival began, they looked for opportunities to share the gospel. It was natural and did not have to be persuaded. They were compelled.

The North Georgia Revival developed a burden to spread what God is doing in the world. One of our outreaches was to the five Boroughs of New York City. We wanted to preach, worship, and baptize people in the darkest regions of New York City. It was the largest mission effort I have ever led. More than 300 people affiliated with our church and the North Georgia Revival descended upon the city.

This would never have been possible prior to revival. But when God touches a people deeply enough, staying comfortable becomes impossible. This outward movement, and others like it, is one of the clearest signs that revival is genuine. When revival is real, the love of God does not stagnate; it spreads.

Revival Was Never Meant to Stay in One Place

Revival is never about benefiting a small group of people. God touches a congregation so that the congregation can touch the world. God does not want His move to be confined to the four walls of the church building. I am convinced revival is not complete until it moves beyond the walls of the church and into the streets, neighborhoods, and nations.

The book of Acts makes this unmistakably clear. The Spirit fell in Jerusalem, but the mission was always the world. Yes, Jerusalem was the birthplace, but the power and glory of Christ were never to be confined to one city, one people.

The Danger of Contained Revival

Revival becomes dangerous and orphaned when people try to contain it. Some want to preserve the experience instead of extending the mission. It is ironic that some want to “bottle” the move of the Spirit rather than spread it. They are afraid if they spread it, they will lose it, but we know by the scriptures that whatever you sow you reap. We gain by giving. We increase by releasing. What we do not want to lose will be lost if we confine it.

We want the fire of revival to spread, and fire is spread by contact. Revival stays alive when it is allowed to flow outward.

The Posture of Service

The best posture in this phase is surrender. It is here where God begins to do the unexplainable and the unpredictable, not just in you but through you. A surrendered life becomes a channel through which God reveals Himself to others.

Those who choose to serve often see facets of God’s character that spectators never experience. How is this possible? They position themselves for it. Sometimes the deepest encounters with God often happen while ministering to others.

I love to hear stories and testimonies of what God did to and for a person, but what really gets me excited is hearing testimonies of what God did with and through a person. Because this is one of the highest aims and purposes of revival.

The Cycle Continues

This is the rhythm of true revival. Not a single moment, but a lifetime of holy cycles, awakening, refining, empowering, and sending. Revival does not move in circles, leaving us where we began. It moves in cycles, each turn taking us deeper into God and farther into His purposes. Encounter leads to transformation. Transformation leads to mission. Mission leads to a deeper encounter. And so the fire continues until a people are formed who no longer merely experience revival, but carry it wherever they go.

Break Free from Spiritual Stagnation and Step into the Four Cycles of Revival.

Have you ever felt caught in repeating spiritual patterns—experiencing moments of breakthrough only to find yourself back in the same struggles? Do you wonder why revival fires seem to surge and then suddenly feel distant? Have you questioned whether the delay you're experiencing is spiritual warfare... or something deeper?

What if what feels like decline is actually divine design?

Through years of frontline ministry in the North Georgia Revival, Todd Smith reveals a transformative truth: God does not lead His people in circles—He leads them through cycles. Each cycle of revival carries divine intention. Celebration gives way to sanctification. Exposure follows outpouring. And what feels like a pullback is often preparation for greater power.

In The Four Cycles of Revival, you'll discover how to:

  • Embrace sanctification as the necessary pathway to sustained revival

  • Discern the difference between emotional stimulation and spiritual formation

  • Move from shallow faith into deeper waters of trust and abandonment

  • Break free from "middle-of-the-pack" Christianity and choose wholehearted surrender

  • Identify hidden heart issues the Holy Spirit is revealing for your freedom

You are not stuck because God has forgotten you. The Holy Spirit is not withdrawing from you—He is refining you. What feels like a pullback may be preparation. What feels like exposure may be cleansing. And what feels repetitive may be an invitation to participate in your own transformation.
