Nephilim Spirit Prophecy: Stop This 1 Pattern Before It Opens a Door to Darkness
In December 2022, as I was waiting upon the Lord, I heard the Holy Spirit say:
The spirit of the Nephilim never left the earth. There’s a shadow of their effects at work all over—in any work that is born out of demonic influence.
I later heard, The spirit of the Nephilim is the spirit of the shortcut mentality. It is a shortcut to freedom—a shortcut to God’s promise.
Genesis 6:4 (NASB) says about the giants, “The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward….” Presuming the before and after here speaks of the pre-flood and post-flood days, it’s not unlikely that the Nephilim, or some form of them, walked the earth after the great flood. Some scholars believe that Nimrod himself, who ruled the pre-Babylonian kingdom of Babel, was one of these giants.
Several factors point to Nimrod potentially being of Nephilim blood. First, both Nimrod and the Nephilim are described using the Hebrew word gibborim, meaning “mighty men.” Second, Micah 5:6 associates “the land of Nimrod” with the land of Assyria, which later became a vassal state of Babylon. Third, the historian Josephus, an extra-biblical source, described Nimrod as desiring to get revenge on God for destroying his forefathers through the flood.
Thus, the reasoning behind the Tower of Babel itself was not merely a power play against the mighty hand of God, but also possibly a form of protection against another flood. If they could build the tower high enough, the waters of judgment would not be able to penetrate their earthly kingdom. They were essentially saying, “We don’t need to do this God’s way. We can make our own way that circumvents God and His judgment.” They were attempting to build a shortcut to paradise, but it was a perverted path they took.
After Nimrod’s death, his memory was exalted by some to a god-like state. Sources even exist linking both the Epic of Gilgamesh and the story of Hercules to the man Nimrod.
It is clear that even back to its ancient roots, at its very core Babylon possessed pride and rebellion against the God of Heaven.
Another biblical link between Nimrod and the Nephilim can be uncovered in Numbers 13 when the Israelite spies return from spying out the Promised Land after their first journey through the wilderness.
So they reported to him and said, “We came into the land where you sent us, and it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless, the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And indeed, we saw the descendants of Anak there! Amalek is living in the land of the Negev, the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites are living in the hill country, and the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan” (Numbers 13:27-29 NASB).
The Israelites observe the descendants of Anak living in the land of Canaan. The Canaanites came from Canaan, son of Ham. Ham was Nimrod’s grandfather (see Genesis 10:8).
As we continue to read, we see the direct connection between the sons of Anak and the Nephilim.
So they brought a bad report of the land which they had spied out to the sons of Israel, saying, “The land through which we have gone to spy out is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are people of great stature. We also saw the Nephilim there (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight” (Numbers 13:32-33 NASB).
Not only were all the people inhabiting the promised land apparently large in stature, verse 33 directly relates the Anakim with the Nephilim. Whether this means they were directly descended from the Nephilim, or whether it means they had a similar origin story, it does not much matter. Either way, they were both giant and rebellious, following the same pattern as their physical, or possibly spiritual, ancestors.
Nimrod goes on to found many cities, including the beginnings of the great Babylon:
And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. From that land he went to Assyria, and built Nineveh, Reho-both-Ir, Calah, and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city (Genesis 10:10-12 NASB).
What was the prophetic word I heard about the Nephilim?
The spirit of the Nephilim never left the earth. There’s a shadow of their effects at work all over—in any work that is born out of demonic influence. The spirit of the Nephilim is the spirit of the shortcut mentality. It is a shortcut to freedom—a shortcut to God’s promise.
Spiritually infused strength and stature would fuel and catapult forward a people’s ability to dominate the earth. Could it be that Nimrod was able to build many cities in a pre-colonized world because of his and his kin’s great strength? Could his giant-like nature have been the shortcut to domination? I believe so. Beyond that, I believe the same shortcut mentality is still at work today, and it is still being infused with “strength” by spiritual beings—demons.
We see this same shortcut pattern displayed, not just in the life of Nimrod, but also throughout the story of Scripture. It started with Adam and Eve being tempted by the serpent in the Garden of Eden. The serpent convinced Eve that the forbidden fruit would provide deeper wisdom that God had hidden from her (Genesis 3:5). Yet eating the fruit resulted in the Fall of humankind.
God promised Abraham and Sarah a son and heir, yet they both attempted to cut short the waiting period, producing an heir not according to God’s plan. This son, Ishmael, created many problems not just for Abraham and Sarah, but also later for the sons of Israel (Genesis 16:12).
The Israelites themselves complained in the desert, speaking about rising up against Moses and returning to Egypt (Numbers 14:4). They also whined about the food and water resources (Exodus 15:24, 16:3), not trusting that the same God who delivered them from Egypt could provide for their wilderness trek. Their lack of trust and impatience led them into a shortcut mentality, and they suffered for it.
The devil tried the same tricks with Jesus when He fasted in the wilderness. In exchange for worship, satan promised to give Jesus the kingdoms of the earth that He came to redeem (Matthew 4:9), yet Jesus overcame this temptation to cut short God’s plan. He submitted Himself to the will of the Father in every way, and this submission ultimately led Him to His death.
The story of humankind’s rebellion against God eventually wraps up with God judging the kingdoms of the earth in the book of Revelation. Babylon the Great, the mother of prostitutes becomes the symbol for God’s judgment on the systems that have rebelled against Him throughout the history of humanity.
The name Babylon comes from the Akkadian word babilu, which literally means “gate of god.” From what we know of Babylon in Scripture, it’s obvious that this city is not a gate to the true city of God but rather an imitation and impostor, presenting a false system of godlikeness to humanity. This system started in the Garden of Eden with the serpent telling Eve she would be like God. It expanded until it reached a pinnacle at the Tower of Babel, and even after God’s judgment through the confusing of languages, this system has reestablished itself time and time again in different forms. You could say that Babylon has manifested itself throughout Scripture and throughout history in many different ways but always with the same purpose.
The same way that the literal Babylon acts as a kind of nemesis or adversary to the land of Israel in the Old Testament, metaphorically speaking, the idea of Babylon immortally acts as an adversary against God’s system on earth. In short, Babylon is used by God as a descriptive word for the spiritual force that utilizes the cultures of earth to raise itself up against Him. The same way that Nimrod began to build a tower to thwart God, humanity is constantly building “towers” of many different natures to fulfill the same purpose. Revelation tells us that when God wants to reference the climax of humankind’s rebellion against Him, He uses the word Babylon.
From this, it is not injudicious to say that the same spirits that were acting behind the building of the original tower of Babel are still acting today to try to supersede and supplant God as the true Ruler of earth. These spirits are what I’m calling the spirit of the Nephilim.
Look at John’s reaction to hearing about Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes in Revelation 17:6 (NASB):
And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. When I saw her, I wondered greatly.
The angel obviously notices John’s bewilderment and proceeds to offer an explanation:
And the angel said to me, “Why do you wonder? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns” (Revelation 17:7 NASB).
There is a mystery surrounding the great prostitute involving both a historical explanation and a spiritual one. In Revelation 17:9-10,15,18 (NASB) he says:
Here is the mind which has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains upon which the woman sits, and they are seven kings…. The waters which you saw where the prostitute sits are peoples and multitudes, and nations and languages. …The woman whom you saw is the great city, which reigns over the kings of the earth.
One of the major characteristics of the prostitute is her influence over humanity. She sits upon the seven mountains and the seven kings. She sits among the waters of the peoples of the earth. She is then identified as the great city which reigns over the kings of the earth. This city has already been labeled. It is Babylon.
Not only does she exist historically as a city of influence; she also exists as a system of influence. The seven kings can represent seven kingdoms that have risen to power through-out history; yet, the seven mountains can themselves be representative of seven different major spheres of society in general. We see further implications of this in verse 15. The waters are not limited to specific nations or people groups or times in history.
Instead, they include all peoples, all multitudes, and all nations and languages. She is a city that reigns over many nationalities despite their autonomy to each other. That’s because she is a spiritual city that transcends time and location, and spiritual entities are governed and ruled in the spiritual world by spiritual beings.
The system God calls Babylon in Scripture is an evil system that has existed in the spiritual world since the fall of Lucifer. It is satan’s system through which he is and always has been attempting to gain control of the kingdoms and peoples of the earth.
