10 Cursed Items That Invite Demonic Activity Into Your Home
The Bible tells of a fellow who discovered that you can’t bring something accursed into your dwelling without experiencing severe consequences.
At the fortress of ancient Jericho, Joshua warned the Israelites that all spoils of silver, gold, bronze, and iron collected from the destroyed city were to be a first fruits appreciation offering to God and stored in the tabernacle treasury. A man named Achan stole some of the silver, gold, and Babylonian garments and hid them in his tent, thereby sinning against God. His disobedience prevented Israel’s warriors from successfully defeating the small city of Ai. Achan’s tent was searched and the items were removed, but Achan and his family suffered the consequences (see Joshua 7).
Could there be items in your house that are attracting negative forces, perhaps without your knowledge? Following are some examples.
The Cane from Haiti
The country of Haiti is known as a center of voodoo worship, a religion with roots in Western Africa that involves the ritualistic worship of various spirits and the belief that the spirits of ancestors guide the practitioner through life. Voodoo was brought to Haiti by African slaves, and they eventually mixed their voodoo with elements of Catholicism. In some places where voodoo is practiced, there will also be pictures that represent Mary and Christ.
Years ago, I was preaching at a church in Florida when an elderly gentleman came forward for prayer, limping and leaning on a strange-looking wooden cane that had the carved image of a face on the top. I asked him where he got the cane and he said, “I was ministering in Haiti and a man who made this cane told me that I would need it one day. He said the face is the face of the God I’m serving. I bought it and brought it home. The man was right. I fell after I returned home, and I’ve been using this cane ever since.”
First, I knew that if it was carved in Haiti by a stranger, the face was not God or Christ. The fact that he fell after returning home with the cane aroused suspicion. I suggested to him that perhaps the cane had been carved by a voodoo practitioner and that he should get rid of it and the Lord would heal him. I prayed for him, and the Lord instantly healed his back. He was jumping and rejoicing, and he got rid of that cane.
The Influence of Visual Media
Visual and sound media enter the human soul and spirit through the eye and ear gates. Growing up in the 1960s, in the era of black and white televisions with rabbit ear antennas, there were three national networks: ABC, CBS, and NBC—the American, Columbia, and National Broadcast Systems. Today there are hundreds, with the United States being the headquarters for numerous Christian and secular channels. When noted ministers such as Rex Humbard and Oral Roberts pioneered the television broadcast of their ministries, the hindrances they experienced appeared insurmountable.
With the eventual introduction of cable and satellites, the number of television stations increased from three to hundreds, including several geared to children and teen programming. The networks began with innocent and rather silly cartoons, and eventually many sitcoms and movies were aired.
Today, it seems that almost all forms of media geared to teens contain much dark content that emphasizes witches, demons, curses, and other occult themes. Teens in public schools who are attracted to dark content will sometimes claim to be satanists or witches, often bragging about their supernatural ability to cast spells on others.
The music went from Elvis Presley shaking his legs and singing about someone being a hound dog, to darker themes emphasizing drugs, drunkenness, and promiscuity—all of which is contrary to biblical principles and true Christian beliefs.
When media normalize such behavior, a rebellious child is all too happy to follow their lead. Two of my friends had experiences with drugs, television, and evil spirits that terrified them both when they were young men. One was smoking hallucinogenic drugs and saw a demonic spirit walk from the television. The spirit mockingly said, “See, your mother’s prayers aren’t working!”
Another friend who is now in Heaven shared that in his younger days when he was away from the Lord, he attended a party with several other people. Suddenly he saw a demonic-looking creature step out of the television and curse him. He thought perhaps he was having a bad drug experience until several others in the room saw and heard the same thing. He was even more shaken to learn that those who saw this evil spirit had grown up in church and been raised in Christian homes, yet they were not serving the Lord.
Today our society has a plethora of media, most of which young people now watch or listen to on an electronic device. Parents often have no idea what their children are viewing on these devices, perhaps because parents are not even aware of what is available at the touch of a screen. Modern smartphones became popular in the mid-to-late 2000s, and this problem has escalated ever since.
Allowing this kind of content into your home also allows the spirits attached to it to have access into your home. Your children who watch it will also be negatively influenced.

Certain Objects Can Attract Negative Spirits
I once was asked by an unsaved individual if certain items can attract negative spiritual forces. The answer is indeed they can. Let’s consider three different items, two of which are easily recognized and worn among Christians. First is the cross. When we see someone wearing a cross necklace, we immediately assume the person is a follower of Christ (although that is not always the case). Another symbol is the 6-pointed Star of David(the Megan David), which is made up of two overlapping triangles. This is a globally recognized emblem of the Jewish people, and the star is displayed on the Israeli flag. Many Christians also wear the star as a public symbol of their support for Israel. A third emblem that sometimes causes Christians to confuse it with the star of David is the 5-pointed star, made up of a single continuous line, that is often used as an occult or wiccan symbol. It might have a goat’s head in the center or a circle around it. These are believed by occult followers to represent protection or rebellion, and they are sometimes used in their occult ceremonies.
A few years ago, I was told of a strange incident involving a piece of jewelry. A vocalist and songwriter in the pop music industry told me that she had a stylist who was weirdly obsessed with her. The stylist gave her a gold necklace with her first name on it. One night she (the vocalist) woke up in the middle of the night and saw a demon that looked like a combination of a dog, wolf, and dragon-like creature creeping through the glass door and slinking around the bed. She knew enough about spiritual things to start praying and speaking, “I am covered by the blood of the Lamb.” Even though she wasn’t living for Christ at the time, she had been raised in a Pentecostal church and the words just came out of her mouth. The next day she called her mother, who told her to throw that necklace into the fire, and that is what she did. The next day she was singing at a festival and became so sick, she had to be hospitalized. She said that she never spoke to the stylist again, praise God.
Even in biblical days, pagans used certain items that held religious meaning. God Almighty often warned the Hebrews to avoid idolatry and not to worship the idols of people around them. When God used Moses to pronounce judgments against the Egyptians, who worshiped a plethora of gods, the ten plagues were directed against ten of Egypt’s false gods. Psalm 78:49 (NKJV) reads, “He cast on them the fierceness of His anger, wrath, indignation, and trouble, by sending angels of destruction among them.”
Any object that has been used in occult activity or the worship of a false religion, especially something that is still used in worship, can have demonic activity connected with it. After one of our neighbors moved into his home, the family began to experience a strange presence. Sometimes they would see a shadowy figure that would appear and suddenly disappear. He heard me preach about “purging your house” and asked for advice. I told him to look throughout his house for any object that might be linked to the occult or another religion. This led him to discover that an item of furniture he had purchased was, in fact, a pagan altar.
Removing Occult Influences
In the book of Acts, the city of Ephesus experienced a revival that shook the city. The spiritual fruit of true conversion became publicly evident as noted in Acts 19:18-19 (NKJV):
And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver.
Basing the value of their books on ancient silver Attic drachma coins, the materials burned would have been worth tens of thousands of dollars. The early Christians burned the books because they did not want the false teaching and occult-inspired content to spread to others.
Second Corinthians 6:14 and James 3:11 tell us that light cannot fellowship with darkness, and neither can a tree bear sweet and bitter fruit or a fountain bitter and sweet water. A true believer cannot walk with one foot at the Cross and another foot chained in bondage and siding with the dark kingdom.
When we raised our children, and as we help raise our grandchildren, we teach them from a young age right from wrong and good from evil. Today, more than ever, it is vital to monitor what they watch and what they (or you, for that matter) bring into the home. Anti-biblical and demonic influences are everywhere, even in seemingly innocent children’s programming. It is up to you to control what goes into their minds, despite their protests about your decisions.
Followers of Christ must not waver between two opinions. We will either accept being viewed as a true disciple of Messiah, or we will be a cultural puppet whose strings are being pulled by spiritually blind and bound puppet masters. God’s Word is very clear. His people are not to align themselves with familiar spirits, witches, the occult, or forms of idolatry.
Objects to Remove
Following is a brief list of suggested items to keep out of your home and to remove if they are already there:
Games, including video games, that center on demons, witchcraft, hexes, and curses. Avoid these at all costs.
Books or movies that emphasize and encourage occult or witchcraft activity.
Items linked to false religions or occult themes, including jewelry.
Games, such as Ouija boards, that are used to allegedly conjure spirits.
Content that encourages or normalizes unbiblical and sinful activity, whether it is online or through games or books.
Teach your children what is right and wrong. Explain this biblically as well as socially on their age level. Explain consequences of actions in ways they can understand. Children absorb more information than we sometimes think, and they will remember everything they were taught as they grow older. First-century Christians refused to play games with witches, sorcerers, idol worshipers, or those promoting or practicing activities connected to familiar spirits. We can learn from them as we reject the mixture of truth and falsehood, and as we choose not to allow abominations to enter our homes, our personal lives, or the lives of our children.
