Seduced by Spirits: Demonic Agenda Behind Psychics and Mediums
Excerpted from The NDE Conspiracy.
While most of us would tend to use the words psychic and a medium interchangeably, there is a distinct difference between a psychic and a medium.
Psychics utilize intuitive abilities—such as clairvoyance (clear seeing), clairaudience (clear hearing), and clairsentience (clear sensing)—to gather information about an individual’s past, present, or future. They often connect with their own spirit guides or tune into the energy of the person being read to provide insights.
Mediums specifically focus on communicating with spirits of deceased loved ones. They serve as intermediaries between the physical and spiritual realms, delivering messages from the departed to the living. This process aims to provide evidence of the continued existence of the soul and offer comfort to those grieving.
Again, while the differences between a psychic and a medium may be inconsequential in many cases, I’ve found it extremely helpful to understand that there are clear distinctions, especially when I’m reading or watching anything where they are mentioned. I have a more precise understanding of what’s going on, given that little bit of extra context.
Biblical Prohibitions Against Consulting Mediums and Necromancers
If you were to ask the average person if the Bible mentions psychics or mediums, many would point you to 1 Samuel 28 for the well-known account of King Saul disguising himself and secretly visiting the medium, or witch, at Endor:
Now Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had put the mediums and the necromancers out of the land. The Philistines assembled and came and encamped at Shunem. And Saul gathered all Israel, and they encamped at Gilboa. When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, either by dreams, or by Urim, or by prophets. Then Saul said to his servants, “Seek out for me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, there is a medium at En-dor” (1 Samuel 28:3-7).
When Saul begins talking to the woman about conjuring up a spirit for him to communicate with, she surprisingly pushes back on him saying, “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the necromancers from the land. Why then are you laying a trap for my life to bring about my death?” (1 Samuel 28:9).
As this account continues, the medium is able to divine a spirit, which Saul believes is the spirit of the prophet Samuel and a dialog ensues between Saul and the spirit about Saul’s concerns over his current predicament with the Philistines and God’s silence when Saul seeks Him for guidance about this matter.
Of all people among the Israelites, King Saul most certainly knew that God forbade consulting witches and mediums. The Old Testament book of Leviticus is quite clear on this matter stating:
Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God (Leviticus 19:31).
If a person turns to mediums and necromancers, whoring after them, I will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people (Leviticus 20:6).
A man or a woman who is a medium or a necromancer shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones; their blood shall be upon them (Leviticus 20:27).
When you view this situation of Saul going to the witch at Endor through the lens of these verses when his hope is to hear from God, it is quite ironic if not comical. God is warning the Israelites to avoid rubbing shoulders with the mediums and necromancers so they can avoid defiling themselves in this way, which would put more distance spiritually between God and his people.
Again, Saul surely knows this prohibition, yet he went forward with this scheme anyway. When you already aren’t hearing from God, choosing an action as a resolution that God says will cause Him to set His face against you and cut you off from among your people seems like the worst possible choice. And based on what we see in verse 27, the medium is rightfully fearful as the punishment for a medium or necromancer is death by stoning.
As to why Saul made this terrible decision, we need to remember that he was in a desperate situation and wanted to hear from God for direction on the upcoming battle with the Philistines. In the past he had been able to receive guidance through the prophet Samuel, but this was no longer an option. In a tight spot, Saul decided to take matters into his own hands, a practice that he seemed to do way too often throughout his tenure as king.
Rather than continuing to seek God on this matter, he chose an alternate and forbidden path. I believe Saul’s choice speaks to a fracture in the foundations of his relationship with God, where he no longer trusted God to come through for him. Saul would have been better off going after repentance and restoration with God, rather than consulting a medium.
Saul pays the ultimate price during the battle on Mount Gilboa. We read in 1 Samuel that “Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance. He did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse” (1 Chronicles 10:13-14).
Did the Medium at Endor Actually Conjure the Spirit of Samuel?
The related passage in 1 Samuel 28 doesn’t give any indication that the apparition, or spirit, that the medium conjured is anything other than Samuel. It’s worth noting that she screams out in surprise when she sees Samuel and accuses Saul of trying to trick her. She likely was expecting to hear from her spirit guide or familiar spirit (think demon) who normally assisted her in her séance. In this case, based on how the text seems to indicate that this is Samuel, it does appear that God allowed the spirit of Samuel to return to give King Saul the news of his coming defeat and death.
While on the one hand this verse seems to indicate that it may be possible for the spirit of a deceased person to return when divined if God allows it, I would say that 99.9 percent of the time that “person” who is being channeled through a medium is a demon masquerading as the deceased person.
If I Consult a Psychic or Medium, Am I Going to Get Possessed?
First off let me say that since the Bible explicitly condemns consulting mediums and necromancers, that should be enough to encourage most of us to steer clear of them. However, I know some people are going to have moments like King Saul, when rather than humbling themselves and continuing to seek God for answers even if He has been silent, they’re going to impatiently take matters into their own hands and seek out a psychic or medium. What can happen?
By willfully welcoming input from into your life from a “departed soul” or “spirit guide,” you are essentially giving a demon permission to come into your life. This automatically puts you on what I like to call the “first rung of the ladder of progressive demonic activity,” which as you’ll remember from previous chapters starts with infestation and can progress to oppression, obsession, and finally possession.
I am quite well-read in exorcism and deliverance, and many exorcists and deliverance ministers note that consulting psychics and mediums is a common entry point for demonic harassment in a person’s life. Let’s see what some former psychics and mediums have to say about their past practices after converting to Christianity.
Jenn Nizza, a former psychic medium, believed she was communicating with the deceased. However, she later recognized that the entities she interacted with were demonic in nature. Nizza describes how these demonic forces provided information to psychics, masquerading as benevolent spirits or deceased loved ones. After turning to Christianity, she recounted that the demonic activity in her life diminished significantly.
Marcia Montenegro, a former professional astrologer and psychic, recounts the dangers associated with contacting spirit entities. She emphasizes that, contrary to popular belief, engaging with these entities can lead to interactions with demonic forces. After years in the occult, Montenegro turned to Christianity and now warns others about the spiritual risks involved in such practices.
A Reddit User’s Testimony: In a discussion on Reddit, a user shared their personal experience of practicing mediumship and unknowingly interacting with demonic entities. They recounted that after a year of engaging in these practices, they realized the true nature of these spirits. Upon converting to Christianity, much of the demonic activity they experienced ceased.
Why Are So Many People Attracted to Working with Psychics and Mediums?
As I’ve stated earlier, one reason I believe people are attracted to working with psychics and mediums is that like King Saul, they’ve become impatient and no longer want to wait on God for answers. This biblically prohibited path for whatever reason in that moment seems like a convenient shortcut to answers.
In terms of the work of psychics and mediums in the near-death experience space, it definitely gives them access to a massive pool of potential clients. The NDE space is filled with grieving people hoping against hope to talk with their deceased loved one just one more time. They’re desperate to know that they are doing okay on the other side of the veil. While I’m sure that some of the psychics and mediums working in the NDE space wholeheartedly feel like they have good intentions and are making a difference, the reality is they’re leading these desperate and unwitting participants down a potentially very dark path.
What to Do if You Have “Ghosts” in Your Home?
If the experiences of demonic infestation I’ve described in this book sound like something you or a loved one are experiencing in your home, you may be wondering how you can eradicate the evil presence from your place of dwelling.
As a starting point you could pray Saint John Chrysostom’s Deliverance Prayer over yourself for several days:
**O Eternal God, You who have redeemed the race of men from the captivity of the Devil, deliver me, Your servant, from all the workings of unclean spirits. Command the evil and impure sprits and demons to depart from the soul and body of Your servant to not to remain nor hide in me. Let them be banished from me, the creation of Your hands, in Your holy name and that of Your only-begotten Son, and of your life-creating Spirit, so that, after being cleaned from all demonic influence, I may live godly, justly, and righteously and may be counted worthy to receive the Holy Mysteries of Your only-begotten Son and our God, with whom You are blessed and glorified, together with the all-holy and god and life-creating Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
If the activity continues despite your prayers, you may want to think back to when this activity of manifestation first began. Perhaps you inadvertently brought a cursed or demonically charged object into your home. If you live among other people, could one of them be using tarot cards or a Ouija board that has attracted a demonic presence to this location. If the infestation has been a problem since the moment you set foot in your home, it may be that something significantly evil unfolded in that location that has attracted a demonic presence. Since you find yourself in a circumstance where you are unable to rid your dwelling of this presence on your own, you should consider asking for help from your pastor or priest for a formal house blessing to rid your space of evil spirits.
Conclusion
Today psychics and mediums are pretty much ubiquitous in terms of their part in the books, online content, and events related to near-death experiences and the afterlife. When we examine the works of psychics and mediums in light of what we read in the Bible, it is very explicit that the practice of necromancy and divination is considered both wrong and evil. In terms of the person who consults a medium, the Bible warns that they will defile themselves; as in this circumstance, you are giving implicit permission for your life to now be impacted by a demon or demons.
Many of the former psychics and mediums who are no longer practicing after becoming Christians say they now realize that the spirit guides they were partnering with were actually demons. If we think that our lives are being directly impacted by a demon, we can always pray for God’s protection and that the demonic entity would leave us alone. If our prayers prove to not be enough, we may need to seek the counsel and assistance of a pastor or priest. The bottom line is, we would all be wise to be wary of and avoid psychics and mediums and anything else that has the potential to open a gateway for the demonic to wreak havoc in our lives.
